We live here in Philadelphia. My daughter will go to college in North Carolina. We are thinking of transferring the title of the car to his name so he can car insurance under his name as well. What I want to know if she needs to get car insurance here in Philadelphia or in North Carolina?

Typically a person needs to register and insure the vehicle they are a resident of. Your daughter will be considered a non-resident in North Carolina if she is an out of state college student who intends to return to her residence upon completion of her college educations.If this is the case then your daughter will need to register and insure it in Pennsylvania.

Before registering a vehicle in Pennsylvania your daughter will need to find out if the car insurance policy in PA will cover her fully while she is in North Carolina. Both Pennsylvania and North Carolina have different car insurance requirements so she needs to verify this first before buying car insurance.

In Pennsylvania, the minimum required liability insurance limits are 15/30/5 while in North Carolina the required minimum liability is 30/60/25. Your daughter will need to be sure that she is fully insured in the state where she will be doing most of her driving. Your son may also speak with her university student affairs to know what is the best step to make.
